Safety First

First and foremost, every rider should be wearing a lifejacket at all times. It would be best if you also were mindful of the safety guidelines that apply to the water. A personal watercraft (or PWC) is categorized as a Class A vessel by the Coast Guard. Knowing the laws and guidelines that are applicable to boats under 16 feet is very important. Additionally, always wear the proper kill strap to ensure the engines shut off if you happen to go overboard.

Throttle to Turn

One of the biggest mistakes that novice jet ski riders make is trying to turn while letting off of the throttle. This is a natural first instinct but is the exact opposite of what you should do. Turning a jet ski requires the propulsion engine to be engaged. If no throttle is applied, you will continue moving in the direction you are currently aiming. Again, apply the throttle in order to avoid any oncoming objects.

Reboard from Behind

While riding, there is a chance you will fall off of the jet ski. This is completely fine and generally adds to the excitement. When reboarding the jet ski, always climb up from the back using the handle on the seat. If you try to board from the side, you risk flipping the jet ski over. Should this occur, don’t panic. The jet ski will most likely have an arrow on the back telling you which way to flip the jet ski back to the right side up. Use your body weight to push down one side of the jet ski and it should pop right back up.
